Council on Aging Programs – Week of May 8, 2023
The Council on Aging offers fitness classes and social and educational programs, as well as information and referral services for residents 60 and older and those who support them. MONDAY, MAY 8
9:30am: Walking Club – At the Cochituate Rail Trail
Join our friendly Walking Club to walk with Wayland seniors for up to an hour. The Club has resumed meeting outdoors at the Cochituate Rail Trail. Contact Shawna Levine at slevine@wayland.ma.us or 508-358-2990 to register and for directions and parking instructions. No fee. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a water bottle.
9:30am: Drop-In Games and Newspapers – In Person in the COA
Drop by the COA for board games, bridge (intermediate to advanced), or just for coffee, newspapers, and conversation.
9:30am: Tai Chi – In Person in the Large Hearing Room
THERE WILL BE NO TAI CHI ON MONDAY, MAY 8. Join us again next Monday. This ancient form of Chinese exercise enhances the flow of internal energy in the body using slow, graceful movements, breath work and meditation. The class involves continuous movement and may not be suited to those who use a cane or walker.

Camille Pissarro’s Experiments in Style: Trace the extraordinary life and impact of Pissarro, both as an artist and an influence on other artists.
George Seurat’s Vision of the People: Witness how Seurat invented a new way of painting, fusing classical training with optical science and color theory.

10am: Lois’ Fit For the Future – In Person, Large Hearing Room
Lois Leav’s aerobic and strengthening class meets in the Large Hearing Room in the Town Building. Registration and fee required.
10:30am: Knit Together – On Zoom
Knit in the company of other knitters over Zoom. Some are knitting children’s wear — mittens, hats, scarves — to donate to The Knitting Connection, which gives them to families in need; we have a collection of donated yarn and knitting needles for that purpose. 1:00pm Drawing and Watercolor Class – In Person in the COA
Instructor Rahul Ray focuses on fundamental skills in this four-session class. Using pencil or watercolor paints, work on observation, perspective, scale, and technique. $40 for four classes. Registration required.

With certified instructor Ellen Cohen-Kaplan, use resistance bands to increase range of motion and strength. Registration and fee required.
10:15am: Zoomba – On Zoom
Enjoy this fun cardio dance class led by certified instructor Ellen Cohen-Kaplan. Registration and fee required.

10:30am: Housing Workshop: Exploring Senior Housing Options – In Person in the COA
Exploring Independent and Assisted Living, Continuing Care Retirement Communities, and Memory Care. Panelists include Michelle Woodbury from 2Sisters Senior Living Advisors and Laurie Cashman, Director of Education at the Massachusetts Assisted Living Association. Reservations required.

1:00pm: The Crown, Season 4 – In Person in the COA
Season 5 of The Crown brings the story of the Royal Family into the 1990s. As Diana and Charles wage a media war, cracks begin to splinter the royal foundation. We will show two approximately 50-minute episodes each week. Enjoy tea and biscuits.
5:00pm: Trivia and Pizza – In Person in the COA
Join with Wayland High School students for a fun, inter-generational trivia game, and enjoy pizza and cold drinks afterward. This student-led event is a National Honor Society community project. Come on out and support our students! Reservations required.

9:30am: SAIL: Stay Active and Independent for Life – On Zoom
This interactive, evidence-based class is led by the incomparable Joe Fish. The class helps improve balance and mobility, reduce the risk of falls, and improve quality of life. Participants can take the class while seated, and Joe can tailor class to other individual needs. Registration and fee required.
10:00am: Yoga Strengthening – In Person in the Large Hearing Room
Certified yoga instructor Joe Scianna leads this class designed to stretch and strengthen various areas of your body, bring vital balance, and restore all systems to vital health. Bring a mat. Chairs can be used if needed. Registration and fee required.
