Virtual Author Talk: Anders Gyllenhaal and A Wing and a Prayer

With his co-author and wife, Beverly, Gyllenhaal reports on what’s being done to save birds in the midst of dramatic downturns in North American populations.  Their presentation draws on their 25,000 miles of travel across the hemisphere researching the book, and interviews with 300 people in every station in the world of birds.  Register.  Monday, October 30 at 7 p.m.

Virtual Author Talk: John Stamos and If You Would Have Told Me

Full House star, John Stamos, will lead us through his incredibly moving and vulnerable memoir.  Whether showing off his comedic chops on Full House or his dramatic skills on ER, pushing the boundaries on Broadway or living out his youthful dreams as an honorary Beach Boy, John has surprised everyone, most of all himself.  Register.  Wednesday, November 1 at 8 p.m.

Author Talk: Tammy Donroe Inman and New England Desserts

Since the very first taste of maple syrup, New England’s native plants and fresh dairy products have been used over the past four centuries to create desserts for the nation.  Earning her chops in the test kitchen of Cook’s Illustrated and behind the scenes of the television show America’s Test Kitchen, New England native and trained chef Tammy Donroe Inman has spent nearly 20 years writing about food.  Register.  Thursday, November 2 at 8 p.m.

Author Talk: Kathryn Crawley and Walking on Fire

Greece, 1974.  A young American, reeling from a failed marriage, takes a job teaching disabled children.  The more she learns about this nation awakening from a long dictatorship, the more she questions her conservative Texas upbringing.  When the politics of her new lover threaten her safety, she’s faced with life-altering choices.  Kathryn Crawley worked at The Children’s Way in Wayland for 20 years and lives in Belmont.  In person and online.  Register.  Round Room, Saturday, November 4 at 3 p.m.

Great Presenters–Richard Raiselis: Natural Witness

In a time when we effortlessly record what we see with smartphones, why would a visual artist reject the comforts of a studio for the uncertainties of the outdoors?  Raiselis will show his work and speak about how and why he makes it, addressing his choice to be a witness, to see the natural or constructed landscape with the immediacy of unfiltered looking.  Register.  In person and online.  Tuesday, November 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Author Talk: Craig Harris and Rise Up! Indigenous Music in North America

Join music historian Craig Harris for a multimedia presentation exploring more than 500 years of Indigenous history, religion, and cultural evolution.  More than powwow drums and wooden flutes, Indigenous music intersects with many different genres. Combining deep research with stories by nearly four dozen musicians, Harris offers an eye-opening look at the growth of Indigenous music.  Register.  Wednesday, November 8 at 7 p.m.

Exhibit: South Asians in Wayland

Since the 1970s, South Asian residents in Wayland have grown from about five families to 120. Come learn about South Asian festivals, dance, and food, and perhaps see some familiar faces from Wayland in this new exhibit. And if you didn’t know, there is a Wayland Desi Facebook group you might want to join if you yourself are from South Asia.

PUMPKIN DECORATING CONTEST – PLEASE VOTE!

Voting is now open for our 5th Annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest. Vote for best carved and best decorated for kids, and best carved for teens. We’ll be posting the link on social media and there is a blog post on our website too. People can vote through October 30 and winners will be announced October 31. Pumpkins generously donated by Stop and Shop.

Baby & Toddler Storytime with Ms. Carly

This storytime encourages early literacy and caregiver-child interactions with lively songs and rhymes, bounces, books, and body-awareness. Best for babies and toddlers, with caregiver.

Lego Club

Monarchs and Milkweed

Children will learn about the importance of native plants, and will plant milkweed seeds in small containers, to replant in their gardens at home. 3D Design Workshop: Sliding Box

In this 3D design program, participants will design their own working sliding lid box.  Using Tinkercad.com, participants will assign specific dimensions to create a functional object.  Some experience with Tinkercad is recommended, but not required.  Objects will be printed after the workshop, and will be free.  Ages 8 and up, adults and parents also welcome.  Children younger than 8 are welcome, but parents are encouraged to stay and design with their children.  Registration required. Get Creative: Make a Sculpture!
