Wayland Free Public Library Events – Week of Sept. 25, 2023

ADULT SERVICES

Welcome to Our New Director, Christopher Lindquist

Chris has been a professional librarian since 1989, holding leadership positions in Barnstable, Westfield, and Northborough, MA, as well as Farmington, CT.  He says, “The Wayland Free Public Library combines everything I was looking for in my next position, including a talented and well-trained staff, a Library with rich historical roots, and a forward-looking community which clearly treasures its Library and takes pride in its distinguished history.”  You can greet Chris at an Open House on October 15, or pop by any Thursday morning during his shift at the Reference Desk.

Researching Enslavement in Colonial Sudbury

Colonial Sudbury, which comprised the modern towns of Wayland and Sudbury, included some individuals residing there against their will.  Researching their lives is a challenging task for all communities. Jane Sciacca will share the methods she has found useful in illuminating the names, identities, and stories of people in Wayland and Sudbury who did not receive “All Liberties as Other Towns Have.”  A retired interpretive National Park Ranger who worked at Minute Man and Boston National Historical Parks and Longfellow National Historic Site, Sciacca has been a member of the Wayland Historical Society for 46 years, nine as President.  In person.  Register.  Tuesday, September 26 at 7 p.m.

Virtual Author Talk: Amor Towles

The author of such bestsellers as The Rules of Civility, A Gentleman in Moscow, and The Lincoln Highway discusses his work and process.  Register.  Wednesday, September 27 at 8 p.m.

Minecraft for the Atari Generation

Are you concerned with your kids’ obsession with Minecraft?  Experienced gamer (and Library staff member) Julian Butcher explores the game’s origins, history and objectives, as well as its creative and educational possibilities.  Learn how to safely shepherd your children’s Minecraft adventures and discover useful resources for further family investigation and fun.  In person and via Zoom.  Register.  Thursday, September 28 at 7 p.m.

Take the Case

Our display case in the lower foyer, outside the Children’s Room, is available for the next several months.  Maybe it’s time you showed the world your collection of snuff boxes.  Or the World War II memorabilia your grandfather left behind.  Or there’s a fascinating historical figure whose story you think needs to be told.  If you’d like to discuss an exhibit or display, drop us a line at info@waylandlibrary.org.

Art Installation: Tree of Lace

For the next two months, the tree outside our parking lot door will bear an unusual, beautiful fruit: vintage and antique lace preserved in cement.  It’s the work of Framingham artist Pam Bonaguide of Tall Tales and Curiosity Studio.  She loves and collects old things, which she considers gifts from the past.  Although these lace pieces may have similar patterns, techniques or threads, each is as individual as the women who made them.

South Asian Heritage Survey

The purpose of this survey is to document the experience of Wayland residents of South Asian heritage, whether born in India or anywhere else, for the Wayland Library’s local history collection.  Please complete the survey by October 8.  In appreciation for answering our questions, your name will go in a drawing for a $25 gift certificate for Soul of India restaurant.  Contact mwright@minlib.net with any questions.

Get a Library Card and Win a Prize!  (Maybe!)

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month.  The next time you’re in the Library, pick up some free tickets at the Circulation Desk or in the Children’s Room.  Give them to friends who don’t have a card.  When they sign up for a card and turn in the ticket, both you and they will be entered to win a gift certificate for our Friends’ Book Sale Room.  Take as many tickets as you want.  Maybe you’ll make some new friends!
