Council on Aging Programs: Week of January 23, 2023

The Council on Aging offers fitness classes and social and educational programs, as well as information and referral services for residents 60 and older and those who support them. MONDAY, JANUARY 23
10:00am: Walking Club At the Natick Mall
Join our friendly Walking Club to walk with Wayland seniors for up to an hour. For the winter months, the Walking Club walks indoors at the Natick Mall. Meet in front of Dunkin Donuts. Contact Shawna Levine at slevine@wayland.ma.us or 508-358-2990 to register. No fee. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a water bottle.

9:30am: Tai Chi In Person in the Large Hearing Room
This ancient form of Chinese exercise enhances the flow of internal energy in the body using slow, graceful movements, breath work and meditation. The class involves continuous movement and may not be suited to those who use a cane or walker.

1:00pm: Great Courses In Person in the COA
In the Footsteps of Vincent Van Gogh. Join us for this immersive journey through the world of Van Gogh, filmed on location at historical sites in Europe and enriched by the voices of fellow Impressionists, as well as the music of his time. Written and directed by Professor Jean-Pierre Isbouts, an art historian, best-selling author, and award-winning filmmaker, the series features not only Vincent’s own words, based on his letters, but also those of fellow Impressionists and friends, brought to life by a cast of 11 voice actors.

2:00pm: Connections On Zoom
Connect with friends old and new, and enjoy good conversation in this facilitated discussion group. New members are always welcome. Zoom in and try it out!

TUESDAY, JANUARY 24

10am: Lois’ Fit For the Future In Person, Large Hearing Room
Lois Leav’s aerobic and strengthening class meets in the Large Hearing Room in the Town Building. Registration and fee required.

10:30am: Knit Together On Zoom
Knit in the company of other knitters over Zoom. Some are knitting children’s wear — mittens, hats, scarves — to donate to The Knitting Connection, which gives them to families in need; we have a collection of donated yarn and knitting needles for that purpose. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 25

9:00am: Theratube On Zoom
With certified instructor Ellen Cohen-Kaplan, use resistance bands to increase range of motion and strength. Registration and fee required.

10:15am: Zoomba On Zoom
Enjoy this fun cardio dance class led by certified instructor Ellen Cohen-Kaplan. Registration and fee required.

1:30pm: Movie Matinee: Where the Crawdads Sing In Person in the COA
From the best-selling novel comes a captivating mystery, the story of Kya, an abandoned girl who raised herself to adulthood in the dangerous marshlands of North Carolina. Drawn to two young men from town, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world; but when one of them is found dead, she is immediately cast by the community as the main suspect. As the case unfolds, what happened becomes increasingly unclear, threatening to reveal the many secrets that lay within the marsh. (2022, PG-13, Drama, Mystery; 2hr., 5 min.) Catch up with old friends and make new ones in this friendly, informal conversation group. New participants are always welcome. Join us! Registration required.

1:00pm: The Crown, Season 2 In Person in the COA
Season 2 of The Crown covers the years from 1956 to 1964, including the resignation of the Prime Minister and a visit from President and Mrs. Kennedy. This lavish, Netflix-original drama chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth II from the 1940s to modern times. We will show two approximately 50-minute episodes each week with a break in between. Enjoy tea and biscuits. Bring your own china cup if you are so inclined.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 13

9:30am: SAIL: Stay Active and Independent for Life On Zoom
This interactive, evidence-based class is led by the incomparable Joe Fish. The class helps improve balance and mobility, reduce the risk of falls, and improve quality of life. Participants can take the class while seated, and Joe can tailor class to other individual needs. Registration and fee required.
