*Media Advisory* Wayland Firefighters to Reunite with Mother and Baby Girl after Home Birth
WAYLAND — Chief Neil McPherson is pleased to report that Wayland Firefighters have earned a pink stork emblem for their efforts to help ensure an expected home birth went as safely and smoothly as possible. The firefighters will reunite with mother and baby outside Wayland Fire Headquarters on Thursday, May 19.

BACKGROUND:
Wayland Fire responded to a residence on Edgewood Road on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 9:33 p.m. after expectant mother Safa Kidwai went into labor with her second child.
Wayland’s Ambulance 1 paramedic unit was already at a medical call at the time, so Engine 2 was pressed into service and responded from the Cochituate Road Station, arriving within minutes.
Upon arrival, three highly-trained firefighters found that baby Nuha was not interested in waiting for a ride to the hospital before being born.
Firefighter Todd Winner, Lt. Dean Casali and Captain Daniel Buentello, all registered emergency medical technicians, set to work. The two fire officers wish to single out Firefighter Winner, who kept mother Safa calm while he assisted with the delivery. While Safa did most of the work, Firefighter Winner got the distinct honor of getting to hold baby Nuha first, when he aided in the delivery, cleared her airways and presented the healthy baby girl to her mother.
Brewster Ambulance/Framingham Fire paramedics arrived minutes later and both patients were transported to a local hospital. They have since returned home and Safa reports that Nuha is a healthy baby girl who wishes to reunite with the firefighters who helped her make her big debut.
The firefighters will reunite with Nuha and Safa on Thursday, and Chief McPherson will present all three firefighters with a special pink stork pin to commemorate the day they helped bring a new life into the world. A special pink stork emblem will be also be ordered to adorn Wayland Engine 2.
“The professionalism and training of our Wayland firefighters was on full display, and we are very pleased with the outcome,” Chief McPherson said. “All too often, those in the fire service are running toward the worst possible situations. In this case, while the home birth setting may not have been planned, our firefighters helped play a role in one of the best possible moments for a Wayland family.”
