Town of Wayland Encourages Reflection in Observance of Juneteenth

WAYLAND — Acting Town Manager Stephen Crane and the Town of Wayland are encouraging staff and members of the community to take time to reflect, observe and celebrate the importance of Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day.

Juneteenth is celebrated annually on June 19, and reflects upon June 19, 1865, when Union Army Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and shared the news of freedom with enslaved African-Americans.

This year, Wayland Town offices will be closed Monday, June 20. In 2020, Gov. Charlie Baker signed into law June 19 as a state holiday. On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed a bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday as well.

“Although Juneteenth became a state and federal holiday only a short time ago, its significance dates far back, and recognition of this day is long overdue,” Acting Town Manager Crane said. “This day is a cause for celebration and is a reminder of how far our country has come since 1865. But, it also serves as an important reminder of the steps that we must continue to take collectively as a nation to combat discrimination. The Town of Wayland looks forward to observing Juneteenth and reflecting on its meaning this year and in the years ahead.”
