Wayland Fire Department Extinguishes Four-Alarm Fire in Auto Body Shop

Chief Neil McPherson reports that the Wayland Fire Department and mutual aid partners extinguished a four-alarm fire in an auto body shop on Main Street in Wayland on Tuesday afternoon.

On Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 3:52 p.m., the Wayland Fire Department was notified by 911 call of a fire at an auto body shop at 116 Main St.

The first arriving companies found fire and heavy smoke showing from the rear of the building, which was occupied at the time. Everyone was able to make it out of the building on their own power.

Due to multiple explosions inside the building, Wayland Firefighters adopted a defensive posture, battling the fire from outside the building while working to project two other adjacent commercial properties.

Firewalls separating the other two businesses from the auto body shop appear to have their done their job and helped Wayland Firefighters prevent the blaze from spreading.

A fourth alarm was eventually struck to bring additional manpower to the scene, since extensive overhaul will be required.

The fire was brought under control by about 7 p.m.

One firefighter suffered a leg injury while battling the blaze. 

Firefighters from Sudbury, Sherborn, Framingham, Lincoln, Weston, Marlborough, and Concord provided mutual aid at the scene, as did Brewster Ambulance. 

Firefighters from Ashland, Hudson and Wellesley covered Wayland fire stations.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Wayland Fire Department, with assistance from the State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
