The Academy Awards: the Good, the Bad, and the Outrageous

How did the Oscars get started?  Which greats were never even nominated?  What are some of the ceremony’s most famous (and infamous) moments? Who will win this year?  Join film speaker, podcaster, and cable host Frank Mandosa as he answers these questions and more about Hollywood’s big night.  There will be interactive trivia questions, film clips, poster board displays, movie-themed door prizes, and blank Oscar ballots.  Register.  Tuesday, February 27 at 7 p.m.

Virtual Author Talk: Kim Scott and Radical Candor

You don’t have to choose between being a pushover and a jerk when it comes to managing people.  Kim Scott, New York Times bestselling author, will explain the Radical Candor feedback framework.  She’ll offer practical, tactical tips for how to solicit criticism, give praise and criticism, gauge how what you’re saying is landing, and build a culture of Radical Candor.  Register.  Wednesday, February 28 at 2 p.m.

PlugIn to Climate Solutions

The Caregiver Journey: Ups, Downs, Obstacles, and Resources

An in-person, interactive presentation about the different paths one can take when it comes to being a primary caregiver, aging in place/non-medical home care services, and starting hospice/palliative care.  Presenters include Ellie Anbinder of CareGivers-WellBeing, Angela Crocker and Niki Pugach from The Parmenter Foundation, and Vikki Levine from Ezra Home Care, LLCRegister.  Sunday, March 3 at 2:30 p.m.

The Real Score: Unraveling Myths about Trans People in Sports

In this virtual presentation, transgender journalist Erin Reed will explore the complex and often misunderstood world of transgender athletes. She’ll address the myths and misinformation surrounding “biological advantages,” and interrogate how similar arguments have been historically used to marginalize other minority groups.  She’ll also look at the real-world impact of these sports bans, and consider what transgender inclusion means for society at large.  Register.  Tuesday, March 5 at 7 p.m.

Great Presenters: Dr. John Dowd—What is Your Gut Telling You?

In this discussion during National Colon Cancer Awareness month, Dr. Dowd discuss several of the common gastrointestinal maladies, including colon cancer, the second-most common cause of cancer death in the United States.  He’ll also discuss some of the more common reasons people are seen by gastrointestinal specialists and what it means when you have various GI symptoms.  John Dowd is Medical Director of Endoscopy at Emerson Health Gastroenterology, renowned for his outstanding patient care.  Register.  Tuesday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m.

Virtual Author Talk: Nina Totenberg

You are invited to an intimate conversation with Nina Totenberg, NPR’s veteran legal affairs correspondent, as she talks about her nearly fifty-year friendship with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and her book Dinners With Ruth: A Memoir on the Power of Friendships.  The book also weaves together compelling, personal portraits of other fascinating people from Nina’s life, including her cherished NPR colleagues, Cokie Roberts and Linda Wertheimer.  Register.  Wednesday, March 6 at 4 p.m.

New Catalog and Your Reading History

Our new catalog is here!  If you’ve established a Reading History or other lists in the old catalog, you need to transfer them to the new one to save them.  Log in to your account in the new catalog, go to your lists, and select “Import from Old Catalog.”  Note: large lists may take extra time to migrate.  We’re always ready to help; call or stop by anytime.

Music, Story, Fun! with Ms. Janet

Join Ms. Janet for a musical storytime. She’ll bring her ukulele, rainbow bells, and puppets! We will meet in the Children’s Room. For ages birth through age 4, with caregivers. Please register. Thursdays, February 29, March 7, March 14, March 21, and March 28 at 10:30 a.m.

Baby & Toddler Storytime

This storytime encourages early literacy and caregiver-child interactions with lively songs and rhymes, bounces, books, and body-awareness. Best for babies and toddlers, with caregiver.

Chinese Storytime

Children will listen to stories and rhymes, and sing songs in Mandarin and in English. We will also make Dragon Puppets in celebration of the Year of the Dragon. Baby Signing

Learn how to reduce frustration and help give your baby the ability to communicate before he/she can speak. Benefits of Baby Sign Language: Reduces frustration for everyone, gives babies the ability to express themselves before they can speak, accelerates babies’ speech development, enhances early literacy skills, deepens bonding. Kids Chess Club

Children will learn chess and get tips to improve their game. This is a beginner’s club for children with little to no chess experience. Art Club for Kids

Art Club is for kids in Grades 2-5 who love to draw and paint! This club, led by Wayland parent Emily Kristofek, will meet the first Monday of each month.
