Wayland Health Department Lifts Public Health Advisory for North Pond

WAYLAND — Director Julia Junghanns reports that the Wayland Health Department has lifted a Public Health Advisory for the North Pond area of Lake Cochituate after subsequent testing has shown that cyanobacteria have returned to safe levels.

On July 29, the Health Department issued the advisory due to the Department of Conservation and Recreation receiving visual evidence that indicated a presence of cyanobacteria in the North Pond. Cyanobacteria is a blue-green algae that can be unsafe to humans and pets.

The state Department of Public Health conducted sampling on Monday, Aug. 1 at the Wayland Town Beach, Saxonville Beach and the Route 30/Common Avenue Culvert, and test results showed that Cyanobacteria levels were once again back at safe levels.

As a result, swimming in the waters can safely resume.

Bacteria levels in the area are monitored on a regular basis, and additional advisories will be issued if any additional concerns are identified.
